The Living Legend of Korean Free Improvising Music

Kang Tae Hwan Trio(the Trio, hereinafter) represents the whole history of Korean improvising music. On a matchless position in jazz in Korea, the Trio has proved that jazz still lives with experimental and progressive attitude. The Trio started its own story in 1978. Kang Tae Hwan, the alto saxophonist was joined by two fellows, trumpeter Choi Sun Bae and percussionist Kim Dae Hwan and this trio was categorized as Free Improvising Music, a branch of free jazz.

Since then, Kang Tae Hwan performed in Korea, Japan and Europe as a member of the Trio and a soloist for decades. It was late 1990s when he formed a new trio with other brilliant musicians from younger generation of jazz in Korea. A great percussionist Park Jechun and pianist Miyeon were the two who actualized a totally new sound of band with Kang Tae Hwan. The new Trio recorded two fascinating albums, "Improvised Memories" in 2002 and "Isaiah" in 2005. Until 2009, the Trio performed with numerous outstanding musicians from the world and spouted the beauty of free improvisation. The Trio truly succeeded in creating a unique sound of ensemble with embracing jazz, contemporary classical, and as well as Korean traditional music. Its performance showed surprisingly original compositions and unbelievable improvisations, and completed the ultimate form of Korean improvising music that we can never face otherwhere.

After a break of several years in 2010s, the Trio started to perform regularly again in 2017 and displayed the great musicianship as we saw before. The master Kang Tae Hwan is still passionate to pursue new languages of music and Park Jechun and Miyeon are now called as true virtuosos. The outstanding intuition that the three musicians simultaneously show on stage defines the music of the Trio. And the amazing power of expression let the Trio be the living legend of Korean free improving music.
